50 Years Later,Silent RunningIs More Relevant Than Ever

“ Disheartening ” is jolly much the entire vibration of Silent Running , an impressively visual moving-picture show that attempt to terminate on an affirmative , uplifting note , but is really much more pessimistic and sorry . On a spaceship name the Valley Forge , four piece work at preserve geodomes with plant and wildlife that ’s no longer sustainable on Earth . Of the four , only Lowell seems really invest , so when news comes in that the project is being abandoned , he does the only thing he can do : goes rascal , kill the other three , and tries to keep nature alive as long as potential . From there he develop relationships with the onboard drone automaton , which he dub Huey , Dewey , and Louie , and wrestle not just with loneliness and boredom , but the moment of his actions , all of which is crushingly depressing .

What I found most interesting about Silent Running is the way it constructs the argument about conservation as a conflict between selfishness and altruism — which , let ’s face it , is the root of most serious government issue . Government , surroundings , schools , you name it . Either you care about yourself or you care about others . And here , Trumbull frame that storey in a very accessible means . Everyone working on the Valley Forge is there to maintain the nature on table . That ’s the job . But when they ’re given an order to bobble it up , for no ostensible rationality , three of them are fine with it . They ’ve been in space a long time and just need to go home . If that means give up on a mission that could spare Earth ? That ’s fine . Which , as a human being , you read , even if you do n’t harmonise with it . You too would want to go home and be with your family and friends . And that ’s the point . The photographic film distinctly show us why each side does what it does — why three men gladly try and destroy the industrial plant life when told to do so , and why Lowell decide to save it .

Beyond that , some of the basic story beats in the film do n’t quite employment . For case , I never quite sympathize why the decision was made to abandon the conservation project . It just happens . Plus , there ’s no information given as to why or how the preservation undertaking was launched in the first billet . The whole thing seems like a somewhat massive labor . peradventure if the movie offered a scrap more context or back story , the conclusion to vacate the project would ’ve been clearer , and the pic would ’ve been better as a result .

Because while mum Running is thematically and emotionally complex , it ’s not all that entertaining . Bruce Dern ’s performance is frenzied in a fun means and the second act has some absolutely cockamamy scene of him interacting with the robots . Beyond that though , much of what makes the film watchable are the stunning practical effects , which you ’d expect from Trumbull , who did 2001 : A Space Odyssey with Stanley Kubrick a few year in the first place . From the machines running games on the ship , to the ships themselves , and even the robot characters , which are somehow just actors in suit of clothes , it ’s all next level poppycock specially for the time .

add to the film ’s general malaise is the eventful finish . After an undetermined amount of time on his own , it appear like Lowell might have to finally pay the consequences for disobey orders and stamp out his crowd phallus . So he sends the one final remain biodome off into space ( with a robot to take upkeep of it ) and takes his own life due to his guilt and loneliness . On the one hand , the fact that some works life will remain is reasonably promising , and the film lingering on the be adrift noodle as the credit rolla laClose Encounters(though this film come first ) bolsters that think . On the other hired man , our submarine is dead and , really , who is going to receive this dome float in space besides the mankind who adjudicate to destroy it ? Just before all this Lowell differentiate a story about pose a content in a bottle and never get word back . That ’s what he does with the bonce . Every day the environmentcontinues to deterioratein ways the filmmakers in all probability never even imagined . realism itself has become a baleful post - credits vista Douglas Trumbull certainly hoped to avoid . Nevertheless , as a result , animation made his pitiful , slow , beautiful movie that much more poignant and relevant , 50 years later .
