NASA has released a stunning raw photo of Enceladus , as the Cassini space vehicle peered up at the gelid synodic month from just below the plane of Saturn ’s rings . Wow .
The image was taken in visible light by Cassini on July 29 , 2015 , from a distance of 630,000 land mile ( or one million kilometer ) . The ballistic capsule was just 0.3 degrees below the tintinnabulation plane , and it shows the un - illuminated side of Saturn ’s majestic rings .
Enceladus is turning out to be one of the most interesting objects in the Solar System . NASA explains :
Although Enceladus and Saturn ’s rings are largely made up of water ice , they show very different characteristics . The little ring corpuscle are too tiny to retain internal estrus and have no way to get fond , so they are frozen and geologically idle . Enceladus , on the other mitt , is subject to force that heat its DoI to this very twenty-four hours . This ensue in its illustrious south arctic pee jets , which are just visible above the moon ’s dark , southern limb , along with a sub - surface sea .
late workplace by Cassini scientist suggests that Enceladus ( 313 miles or 504 kilometers across ) has a global sea of liquid water under its surface . This find increase scientists ’ interest in Enceladus and the pursuit to understand the function of water in the development of life in the solar scheme .
That ’s got multitude think thatthis moon , along with Jupiter ’s moonEuropa(which also feature subterranean ocean ) , would make for first-class destinations forrobotic investigation mission .
