So how is the motion picture being receive so far ?
The otakus at ScifiJapan were pretty mad :
The main component of the original account are all in the movie . The film producer were very respectful of the element , character and figure that made YAMATO a favorite to fan of Japanese invigoration worldwide . The Yamato itself has not interchange a bit . The images of the huge place battleship flying through star theater , past planet and out of clouds are impressive . And when strain of the original score crawl in during crucial scenes , the result is a nostalgic joyride and one that bestow a shiver up the spine of any buff of the original brio .
Otaku US ’s Tim Eldred says you ’ll be pretty happy with it if you ’re not expecting a “ pure ” transcript of the anime :
Space - warping from anime to live action can be either traumatic or revelatory , depending on your resistance to compromise . Being a 30 - class consumer of all things Yamato could have made me a prospect for trauma , but I handle to escape that fate . When the flick ’s tormenter lagger come forth on January 1 it had me hooked in under 30 minute , and the two subsequent preview that followed in the spring and summertime demonstrate to me that we did n’t need this to be 100 % accurate . We just need it to remind us what it felt like to see Yamato for the first prison term .
It ’s difficult to account the plot of ground without unleashing a chain of despoiler , since the film Eruca sativa by without a unmarried purposeless anatomy . All I can substantiate is that everyone who speculated it might commingle the Iscandar story together with the Comet Empire was utterly right .
Eldred also says that the film - makers clearly were out to copy Ronald D. Moore ’s Battlestar Galactica reboot , a commentary that’sechoed by Daily Yomiuri ’s Cristoph Mark , who does n’t experience like the BSG homage worked that great :
Everything from the foul , worn - down flavor to filming methods and scenes is lifted from what British paper the Guardian once referred to as perhaps the proficient TV show ever made . ( That ’s BSG , not Yamato . ) Visually , Yamato is a success . Though it does not look as in force as BSG , it is often telling , capturing the right humor with realistic imagery . In fact , it is the best - looking particular - result - heavy film I ’ve ever seen come out of a Japanese movie studio But , the producers of this Takuya Kimura vehicle zigged when they should have zagged , scan the airfoil of what made BSG great — its atmosphere and esthetics — but not full understanding its deep successes , specifically its character ( which had been altered from the BSG of the 1970s ) , its care to realistic point and its high - bore performing .
Finally , the Japan Times ’ Mark Schillinggives it a lukewarm review :
All in all , it still sounds like an amazing plastic film , include great visuals — can not wait to see this ! Let ’s hope it get a U.S. run soon .
