Amazon Web Services , the omnipresent swarm political program thatruns large parts of the internet , has launched a Modern service that may leave some onlookers scratching their heads in confusion — at least initially . The tech giant has announced the launch of physical portals where you may go to upload your data point into its massive digital repository .
The feature was announce ina web log poston Sunday that outlined the new oblation . AWS says that the new portals — which it squall “ data transfer terminals”—are “ secure , strong-arm localization for quick transfer of data point to AWS . ” To use a terminus , you ’ll need to reach out out to Amazon and reserve a time to visit one of the company ’s several placement . Currently , terminals are only located in Los Angeles and New York , but AWS has mark that it plans to summate more localization in the future .
Upon first glance , Amazon ’s new offering might seem somewhat puzzle . The swarm — notably — is digital . Indeed , that is perhaps its most basic , advertised welfare . you could upload large tranche of information to most cloud system with the click of a clit . Why , then , would you want to physically transport your data to Amazon ’s host ? The answer would come out to be : safety and security . The internet isnotably a fucked up place , and there are mickle of opportunities for your data to be stolen or corrupted while digitally en itinerary to its storage destination . With a physical portal , Amazon come along to be promising that your datum will not get lost in translation .

Humorously , AWS has made the whole process somewhat secretive — again , for the seeming purpose of security . “ Do n’t be surprised if there are no AWS sign in the building or elbow room , ” the blog states . “ This is for security reasons to keep your work locating as private as potential . ” The blog includes photos of one of the data upload centers , a nondescript office in a high - rise that gives the whole data transmission process some high - level conspiratorial machination .
It might be safe to accept that AWS portals are plan ( mostly ) for companies and other large organizations and not medium web users . In its blog , AWS take note the benefit of large data carry-over as such : “ you may upload large datasets from fleets of vehicles operate and call for information in metro areas for training automobile learning ( ML ) models , digital audio and video file cabinet from content creator for medium processing workload , and single-valued function or imagery data from local government organizations for geographical psychoanalysis , ” the blog states .
Of course , the cloud , itself , is not just an impenetrable fortress . Cloud system of rules arebreached all the fourth dimension , which is one reason that some security raw sienna favor tostore their information locally , on whatever twist they happen to have in their home or office . AWS , itself , has had its own share of security failures over the years , so just because you securely upload data to its system , that does n’t mean that it ’ll be safe forever .
