It in all likelihood had eight legs , and at least one of them is still wave a knife . That ’s the story from archaeologist in northern Peru , who have announced the find of a 50 - foot wall painting that once was the centerpiece of a pre - Columbian shrine .
The find was made in November 2020 , when James Leonard Farmer attempt to expand their land part destroy a huaca — a Peruvian ceremonial social structure — sitting among their avocado and sugar cane crop . The huaca , now cut in one-half , revealed a striking wall painting .

“ What we have here is a shrine that would have been a ceremonial kernel thou of years ago , ” Régulo Franco Jordán , one of the archaeologists who move about excavating and preserving the elements of the ancient artwork that had n’t been demolished , toldthe Peruvian newspaper publisher La República .
Jordán figure the wall painting was about 3,200 years older and note that about 60 % of the huaca was destroy . The archaeologists attribute the huaca and wall painting to the Cupisnique culture , which used spider as a inspired symbol . The Cupisnique inhabited the area , know today as the Virú Valley , for much of the Iron Age . In 2008 , a fresco of a divine wanderer turned up in a synagogue attributed to the Cupisnique nearby , and other Cupisnique sites have give pottery adorned with arachnids .
This site , dubbed Tombalito by Jordán , abuts the Virú River on Peru ’s northwest coast . One can just make out a couple of the arachnid ’s leg and the weapon it manage in one “ manus . ” The red , livid , yellow-bellied , and hoar pigment are just hardly distinguishable from the khaki brown soil .
“ The spider on the shrine is associated with water and was an fantastically significant animal in pre - Hispanic cultures , which lived fit in to a ceremonial calendar , ” Jordán told La Libertad . “ It ’s probable that there was a special , sacred water ceremony held between January and March when the rains came down from the higher area . ”
