Five different people have taken a twinge at create lists of the top 50 most all important epic fantasy novels of all time . And their different listing let out that … nobody ’s quite certain how to define “ epical phantasy . ” And there ’s been a noticeable shift in the parameters of the genre lately .
Top epitome : Michael Whelan , viaStaffers Book Review .
Jared Shurin at PornoKitsch posted his listhereandhere , include some curious choices like I , Claudius and The Night Circus — and including a lot of very recent material that evince how fantasy has gotten both more gritty and perhaps more postmodern .
Liz Bourke ’s lists arehereandhere , and she includes Dune , a lot of classical text edition , and a ton of clobber published in the last ten years . Very glad she included Jacqueline Carey ’s underrated Sundering duology .
Tansy Rayner Roberts send her listshereandhere . There are some interesting choices here , include comics , movies , boob tube series and Ozma of Oz .
Justin Landon share his listhereandhere , including the Bible , plus Star Wars . And a lot of the classics from the 1960s and seventies . Notably , his lean has a lot more stuff from the 1990s , and less from the past 10 years .
And finally , Ian Salesweighs in , and pretty much intromit his list is mostly not epic fantasy .
All of which leaves me wondering : Can we agree on a definition of “ larger-than-life phantasy ” ? How do you resolve which books set and which do n’t ? Are the Bible and I , Claudius really heroic fantasy book in the same way Lord of the Rings is ?
