When stylist Law Roach puts together one ofAriana Grande‘s outfits, he always incorporates four things — a mini skirt, crop top, ponytail and boots. And he stuck to his tried-and-true formula when it came to her new Sweetner tour looks.

“I always like to say if you put anyone behind a screen with a long pony, an A-line skirt, an over-the-knee boot, the first thing that comes to everybody’s mind is nowAriana Grande,”Roach tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I really do think that one of her ponytails will end up in the Smithsonian one day, that’s how iconic I believe that ponytail is.”

So when they teamed up to plan her Sweetener world tour outfits, which kicked off on March 18, Roach’s fashion approach was to “take her authentic blueprint and make it feel fresh and elevated.”

Thanks to her throwback-themedmusic video for “thank u, next”which paid homage to movies likeLegally Blondeand13 Going on 30, Roach tapped another rom-com hit to inspire one of her looks. Roach worked with Versace to create a plaid look worthy of Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz character inClueless. “The team at Versace had someone fly the costumes in from Milan to hand-deliver them to me,” he says.

And with every outfit, Roach dresses Grande in 6-in. double platforms, which he says she wears with no complaints. “Every single shoe she wears is a platform, and to this day I have never heard her complain,” Roach says ofthe 5-ft.-tall star. “I call her Magic Feet.”
