While there was no newfangled footage or cast announcements made for Star Trek : Discovery at Mission New York today , there was a video from executive producers Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman , which talked a little bit about the choices they ’ve made with the new show .
“ This ship is called the Discovery for a few reason , ” said Fuller . “ Not the least of which is Stanley Kubrick ’s part to the Discovery on 2001 : A Space Odyssey , NASA ’s vessel the Discovery , and also the sense of breakthrough . ” He also drew a connection between the substance of the word to fans , tot that part of the claim comes from “ what the parole ‘ uncovering ’ means to Star Trek hearing who have been promise a future by Gene Roddenberry where we come together as a planet and assay new earthly concern and unexampled exotic race to explore and understand and get together with . ”

Fuller said that this will allow them differentiate “ ample , more complicated ” stories about life on the Starfleet watercraft .
The video itself did n’t reveal anything , the footage was from the old show intercut with the picture of the Discovery revealed in July . The only thing that was actually new was a single shaft of some alien latex that look lounge lizard - free-base . We ’ve been teased this way before .
At the panel in person were Nicholas Meyer and Kirsten Beyer , who both pose in the writers ’ way for the raw series . They also could n’t give any specific about the show , but both agreed that their jobs were to service Bryan Fuller ’s vision for the show . Although Meyer did have one art object of advice for a fan looking for assurance that the show would be everything they hope it would be : “ Lower your expectation . ” He keep on , a bit afterward , “ It is a symbiotic relationship and all I ’m suggesting is that if you go with undecided brain and open hearts , you may be rewarded . Whereas if you go with a curing of impossible to recognize expectations , which even you could not specifically define , then we ’re bound to fail . And so I ’m articulate : Get loose . ”
