Holy crap ! Calvin & Hobbes ’ creatorBill Watterson has been secretly drawing a comic strip!Nobody knew it except Stephan Pastis , the author ofPearls Before Swine . You’re looking at his artwork aright above these lines — the first two panel are attract by the legendary cartoonist , the third by Pastis .
Pastis tells the fascinating — at least for a comic Good Book nerd like me — story of how this collaborationism started on his blog . He excuse how he get hold of Watterson and sent him this strip he just publish that day :
Then tells how , after that email , Watterson proposed him a collaborationism in Pastis ’ strip , Pearls Before Swine . clearly , Pastis could n’t believe his luck :
[ … ] he had a big sense of humor about the strip show I had done , and was very funny , and oh yeah …
… He had a comic cartoon strip idea he require to extend by me .
Now if you had asked me the odds of Bill Watterson ever saying that cable to me , I ’d say it had about the same likelihood as Jimi Hendrix telling me he had a new guitar riff . And yes , I ’m cognisant Jimi Hendrix is dead .
This is another preferent passing of his tale :
At every tip in the process , I fear I would say something wrong . And that Bill would melt back into the ethyl ether . And that the whole affair would seem like a wisp of my imaginativeness .
But it was n’t that way .
Throughout the process , Bill was funny and flexible and easy to work with .
Like at one breaker point when I want to change a line of dialog he wrote , I prefaced it by saying , “ I feel like a street urchin severalise Michelangelo that David ’s hand are too big . ” But he liked the modification . And that alone was probably the cracking compliment I ’ve ever get .
The second panel you could see above these demarcation is Watterson ’s first strip cartoon after two decades of almost total retreat ( his only known drawingwas this movie poster . )
you could see theentire series starting here , where Pastis introduces Watterson ’s alter ego , a second grader called Libby who believes Pastis draws like crap .
