The third season of Syfy ’s horror anthology Channel Zero wrap up last night , bringing a psychotherapeutic end to the fantastic ride that was Butcher ’s Block . The show ’s most artistically challenging season to engagement was also its most challenging , with surrealistic elements weaving through its secret plan and its visuals . It was all very weird … but it also totally worked .
Created by Nick Antosca and directed by Arkasha Stevenson , and inspired by the Creepypasta tale “ Search and Rescue Woods ” by Kerry Hammond , Butcher ’s Block crams a lot of bed into its six episode . It explores the macabre local chronicle of a downtrodden former diligence townspeople , a fictional place that still somehow feels depressingly familiar in contemporary America . It imagines a twisted poof tale that thumb on Alice in Wonderland and small Red Riding Hood . It pays homage to surrealism , David Lynch , Hannibal , Candyman , and Italian repugnance moving picture , among others . It examines the pain of watching a stern genial illness transform a loved one into a stranger , and the panic of inquire if the disease will be passed down through the generation .

You see a maniac killer execute a diffuse - shoe down a infirmary corridor . You see someone greeted at a dinner company host by cannibals with the line , “ I hope you ’re not vegan ! ” And you also see someone who ’s really not in the mood to hear about their student loan rend out the throat of a smarmy collection agent , in an act of sweetest retaliation .
The chief characters — riotous sisters Alice ( Olivia Luccardi ) and Zoe ( Holland Roden ) move to the outskirt of Butcher ’s Block — and before long appeal the stake of the Peaches , whose fiefdom reaches beyond realism and into an alternate realm where the sun always smoothen , nobody ever age , and a demon lurks while awaiting a very special offering . While Alice finds herself slipping under their ascendency , Zoe begin to mystify together precisely what the Peaches are up to . Their room of life is connected , she realizes , to the long string of fade that have plagued Butcher ’s Block , and the spirit of it is very , very evil .
Even if it did n’t have the forward momentum of solve a mystery , Butcher ’s Block would still vibrate with its own strange energy . Part of that is thanks to the performances ; this time of year has , hands - down , Channel Zero ’s most challenging shape to date . As sisters who shin to retrieve a connectedness when they demand it the most , Luccardi and Roden play off each other very well ( they even look alike ) . Hauer is obviously a powerful presence , as is Krisha Fairchild as Louise , the sisters ’ quirky but fight - quick landlady . Another standout is Paula Boudreau , who ’s carefully made up in very dissimilar shipway to play two physically disjoined but spiritually connected characters . ( tip : Both woman are a little too overly lovesome of scissors . )
The previous two seasons of Channel Zero — Candle Cove and No - End business firm — definitely had memorable esthetic touch ( I ’m still haunt by the image of Candle Cove ’s click - brattle Tooth - Child ) . But Butcher ’s Block is so far the series ’ most dishonour entry . The color red is a major motive , echoed in Zoe ’s crimson lip rouge and nail polish , the ruby robes worn by the Peach family ’s pint - sized enforcer ( a sly nod to horror classic Do n’t appear Now ) , the jellybean - like pill that talk around Alice as she begins to lose her grip on reality , the iconic red door that top into the house ’s most significant way , and of course the colossal sum of money of blood that are constantly spray the skeletal system .
But it ’s more than just a color pallette . There ’s just so much item in the production conception , from the Candyman - esque street art that looms like a warning on the walls leading into Butcher ’s Block , to Louise ’s vast taxidermy solicitation , to the lovingly obscene solid food styling that buy the farm into every Peach family repast . And there ’s such self-confidence in its execution that even the most bizarre stuff — like a life-time - sized tool that scramble after Alice and mock her veneration of mental illness , or the show ’s relentless affection for elephantine centipedes , or the sight of Joseph Peach casually crunch on a disembodied human finger — feel like a credible part of Butcher ’s Block ’s version of reality , the service line for which is the freakiest nightmare you ’ve ever had .
Much like previous Channel Zero episode , Butcher ’s Block ends on a musical note that desegregate some major melancholy into its glimmer of Bob Hope . This third time of year , though , also ca n’t resist one last sight laugh — in every mother wit of the word . Needless to say , we ca n’t hold back to see what this innovative series will reveal ( or how it will make us pipe up , repercussion , gaze in awe , or hide our eye ) when it returns for its next time of year .
