The series' creatorSteven Knighttold U.K. outletBirmingham Worldon Tuesday that starCillian Murphy— who recently took home his firstOscar— will reprise his role for the upcoming film.

“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight, 64, said of Murphy, 47. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [England].”

He also praised Murphy’s performance inOppenheimer, telling the outlet that the Best Actor Academy Award he won earlier this month “was so deserved.”

“I mean he’s brilliant, and he’s such a great human being and he leads the line when we’re shooting and he’s so levelheaded and straightforward. He deserves everything he gets,” Knight said.

Knight previously toldVarietyin 2021 that a movie was in “development.” He added at the time, “It’s a fully formed idea and it has a beginning, middle and end. And I think it’s going to be a fitting conclusion to the story told so far.”

In December 2023, the creator gave another exciting update for fans, tellingRadio Timesmagazine of thePeaky Blindersmovie, “The plan is to start shooting that in the middle of next year.”

Meanwhile, Murphy’s first Oscar came for his portrayal ofJ. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in theChristopher Nolan-directedOppenheimer. The film alsonabbed Best PictureandBest Director for Nolan, among other accolades.

Inhis acceptance speech, Murphy thanked longtime collaborator Nolan, 53, the Academy and more, admitting he was feeling “a little overwhelmed” at the honor.

“It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on over the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say,” he continued. “Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member onOppenheimer; you guys carried me through. Allmy fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly.”

The Irish actor went on to thank his “incredible team” and family, including wife of nearly 20 yearsYvonne McGuinnessand their sonsMalachy, 18, and Aran, 16, who were in the crowd. “I love you so much, and I’m a very proud Irish man standing here tonight,” he said.
