In the wake of Aaron Swartz ’s self-annihilation last workweek , Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren of California hasposted a freshly proposed poster on Redditthat seeks to amend the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act .
Referring to the draught posting as “ Aaron ’s Law ” , Lofgren explain that it draw a bead on to forbid the Government levying “ such disproportionate charges ” for incidents like the one Swartz was embroiled in . Swartz was indict in 2011 for downloading thou of donnish papers from the JSTOR database via MIT . He faced up to 35 years in prison , and have his life last Friday .
Lofgren pass on to say that “ we should prevent what happened to Aaron from happening to other Internet users” . From the post :
“ It looks like the government used the vague phraseology of those law to claim that rape an online Robert William Service ’s user agreement or terminal figure of serving is a violation of the CFAA and the wire faker legislative act . Using the legal philosophy in this way could illegalize many everyday activities and allow for outlandishly dangerous penalties . ”
This proposal marks the first major response by Congress to Swartz ’s suicide . Whether Lofgren ’s neb can make a real impact remains to be seen — but it ’s at least a start . [ The Hill ]
