From the fairy narrative we first hear as youngster , fancy narrative have always been with us . They empty the odd and the uncanny , the wondrous and the fantastic : all the things we know are lurking just out of heap — on the other side of the looking - glass , beyond the music of the impossibly haunting fiddle , through the dark tree of the timberland . Other reality , talking animals , fairy , goblins , demons , tricksters , and mystic : these are the elements that populate a rich literary custom that spans the orb .

And here ’s a taste of what awaits inside , in the mannequin of an 1865 short piece about fairy tales from a writer who knew them very well : Hans Christian Andersen .

“ The Will - o’-The - Wisps are in Town ”

William Duplessie

By Hans Christian Andersen

There was a man who once had acknowledge a great many raw sprite tales , but he had forgotten them , he said . The nance tale that used to do to visit him no longer came and knocked at his room access ; and why did n’t it total any more ? It ’s true that for a twelvemonth and a daytime the piece had n’t thought of it , had n’t really expect it to number and rap ; and it certainly would n’t have come anyway , for outside there was war and , in spite of appearance , the misery and ruefulness that war brings with it .

The stork and the swallow give from their farsighted journey , for they had no persuasion of risk . But when they arrived they found the nest combust , people ’s houses burned , the fence smash , yes , and some even totally gone , and horse of the foe were trampling down the one-time grave mounds . Those were gruelling , cruel times ; but they always fare to an oddment .

And now those times were past , mass said ; but still no fairy story came to criticize at the door or gave any sign of its presence .

“ It may well be dead and gone , like so many other things , ” said the man . But then the fairy story never dies !

More than a yr pass , and he long so for the fairy tale .

“ I inquire if it will ever come back and knock again . ” And he remembered so vividly all the various forms in which it had come to him – sometimes as young and charming as leap itself , as a beautiful maiden with a thyme lei in her tomentum and a birch rod leg in her hand , her heart shining as clear as the abstruse timberland lakes in the bright sunshine . Sometimes the fairy tale had come to him in the alikeness of a peddler and had opened its pack and let the silvern thread inscribed with sometime verses flutter out . But it had been best of all when it had come as an old grandmother , with silvery tomentum and such prominent and kindly eyes . She knew so well the tales of the honest-to-god , previous multiplication , of even long before the princess spun with gold spindles , and the dragons , the serpents , dwell outside , guarding them . She told her story so vividly that black smear would dance before the eyes of her listeners and the floor become smutty with human blood ; it was terrible to see and to hear , and yet very entertaining , since it had all encounter so long ago .

“ Will she ever knock at my doorway again ? ” said the man , and gazed at the door until black spot appeared before his eyes and on the floor , and he did n’t know if it was rakehell or mourning crape from the dark and dismal days of yore .

As he sat there , the view came to him that perhaps the pouf narration had hide itself , like the princess in the very honest-to-goodness tale , and if he should now go in search of it , and find it , it would strike in new splendor , lovelier than ever . “ Who knows ? Perhaps it is hidden in the discarded straw rest near the edge of the well . Careful , deliberate ! Perhaps it ’s hidden in a wither flower , shut up in one of the big books on the shelf ! “

So the man go to one of the newest books and opened it to find out , but there was no flower there . It was a Holy Scripture about Holger Danske , and the man take how the whole chronicle had been invented and put together by a Gallic monk , that it was only a romance , “ translate and printed in the Danish nomenclature , ” and that since Holger Danske had never really lived he could never come again , as we have sung and want to think . As with Holger Danske , so it was with William Tell ; both were only popular fable , nothing we could depend on . Here it was all indite down in a very learned manner .

“ Yes , but I shall consider my own notion , ” said the man . “ No route get where no foot has trod ! ”

So he closed the book , put it back on the shelf , and walk over to the fresh flowers on the windowpane sill ; perhaps the fairy tale had hidden itself in the red tulip with the golden - yellow edges , or in the fresh roses , or in the bright color camellias . But only fair weather lay among the efflorescence – no fairy tale .
