Between Worlds is the later indie genre pic in Nicolas Cage ’s mini - renaissance . Previously , films likeMom and DadandMandyhave utilize Cage to full effect in eldritch , exciting stories . Unfortunately , Between Worlds does n’t come close to either of those film , presenting an interesting premise in a bland , made - for - TV - like package .
Written and target by Maria Pulera , Between Worlds is about a alone teamster named Joe ( Cage ) who meets a mysterious char named Julie ( Franka Potente ) . Julie ’s daughter Billie ( Penelope Mitchell ) was in a bad bike accident and is near expiry . As it happens , Julie has the ability to leave behind her dead body and impart people back from the deadened — but , when she does that for Billie , she instead brings back Mary , Joe ’s beat ex-husband - married woman , who takes over Billie ’s body . That leaves Joe in quite the quandary . He ’s a flawed cat with a good eye who seems to be finding felicity with Julie . But he ’s also allure by her youthful girl , who now has the memories and traits of the love life of his life .
By that premiss alone , there ’s so much way for drama : magnanimous fight , tense interaction , uncomfortable exchanges . Unfortunately , the picture show has very small of that ; it ’s almost wholly devoid of tension , play , or personality . Even when these huge divine revelation are made to the fictitious character , it all happens in a very “ Oh shucks , ” topic - of - fact kind of agency . For illustration , when Joe realise Billie is actually Mary , there are a few moments of shock , followed by full belief and compliance . No one ever seems specially surprised about anything at any point in the moving picture , which wastes the full assumption .
You ’d think some vigour would at least add up from seasoned actors like Cage and Potente , but you ’d be faulty . While Cage has a few moments here and there , for the most part , both performers coast through the flick as if they are intoxicated and stoned . ( Which , to be fair , their character reference frequently are — it ’s how they stay all dead to the world around them . ) It also does n’t aid that the grade by Jason Solowsky feels like a Southern - baked cradlesong , adding another bed that ’s just a fleck too laid - back . The medicine definitely matches what Pulera puts on blind , but it does n’t give the movie a much - needed impulse .
Between Worlds is a massive dashing hopes : a great idea with astonishing talent , but an unluckily flat execution . It had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2018 and currently does not have a U.S. going date .
