Facebook , the social media giant thathelped enable genocideand yet is still set aside to exist for some grounds , had a big public relations push this weekend . And if the news tale that fall out are give you asense of deja vu , you ’re not alone .
Facebook has a raw European “ warfare room ” to combat election interference as the European Union prepares for elections on May 20 . And the new European warfare way sound an awful lot like the American war room that earn a lot of insistence in the lead up to the 2018midterm elections .
What actually happen in this Facebook state of war way ? We ’re not indisputable , exactly . But we do know that it ’s staffed with hoi polloi who are apparently “ hunched over ” and await very engaged . We also know that Facebook suffer a ton of press for this bunk .

FromPolitico.eu(emphasis ours from here on out ):
In a sparsely decorate office in the center of the Irish capital , dozens of Facebook staffers are lick to protect the upcomingEuropean election .
The group of twentysomething software engineer , engineers and capacity specialists sit hunch forward over multiple screens , scanning the platform for potential illegal doings . paries - mounted television monitors keep them up to date on the latest yakety-yak on the macrocosm ’s gravid social web , Instagram and WhatsApp . A single European Union flag hangs on the rampart , next to a placard emblazoned with the motto “ New Ways of Seeing . ”
Ooh , twenty - somethings hunched over screens . Sounds serious .
Fromthe Guardian :
This week it took more than a twelve journalists to the Dublin “ war elbow room ” at the heart of its efforts to protectEuropean election , to show off the resources it is pouring into protecting the continent - broad vote .
Until the 23 May poll parrot , and for several days after , about 40 mass will be hunched over screens around the clock , monitoring the switch footstep of on-line conversation , looking for signs of manipulation , faux news show or hatred speech . They are backed up by a planetary web include threat intelligence information experts , data scientist , investigator and engineers .
Again with the hunched - over people . Can we get them an ergonomic chair or something ? possibly a bean cup of tea ? Anything would be better than being hunch over all day .
Mercifully , theFinancial Timesignored that everyone was hunched over but still return credulous coverage that this “ state of war room ” was doing something utilitarian :
Facebook has gather a squad in Dublin to supervise for misinformation ahead of European Parliament election in May , get together 40 citizenry at its European headquarters to fight against any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the ballot through its apps .
The team , made up of data scientist , engineer , and cyber security officers , are part of a 500 - soul elbow grease to supervise election across the world and will work on the EU suffrage in the run - up to the May 20 voting . The squad will also have policy experts from each of the 28 land keep elections and aboriginal speakers in all 24 official EU speech .
AndIreland ’s RTEnews service , which include a very fancy - sound term , “ threat intelligence specialist ” :
The war way is staff by 40 people , including threat intelligence information specialists , datum scientist , locomotive engineer and local expert , who are then back up by hundreds more people on safe and security teams around the world .
Their job is to close fake accounts , suss out those run away political and issue ads are brook by the transparency rules , limited review content and close down coordinated disruptive activity .
gratefully , theNew York Timesat least hollo bull on the full parody :
Inside the elbow room , employee — many in jeans , thyroxine - shirts and hoodies — appeared to be mostly in their XX or thirty . Many seemed to be browsing news article from the land they were overseeing .
It ’s backbreaking to know what effect their work may have beyond public relations . Facebook allow journalists to follow for only a few minutes . Citing surety concerns , the company did n’t allow employee interviews , and it set what could be photographed .
Plenty of news outlets still fall for Facebook ’s bullshit Commonwealth of Puerto Rico campaigns , but it ’s good to see the Times , at least , calling it out for what it is . When you invite a bunch of journalist for a sojourn , you ’re going to get some hoi polloi who take your bullshit at face value and write about how everyone was work very hard .
But if a fellowship like Facebook does n’t appropriate those same journalist to even ask questions of those “ hunched over ” workers , you get laid something fishy is going on .
Facebook has a tidy sum of work to do to combat extremism and election interference on its platform . But that is n’t become to be solve by 40 people “ hunched over ” in a “ war room ” that ’s understandably just set up for public sexual relation intention . Try intemperately , Facebook . And at the very least , do n’t try the same tricktwice .
