To write short fantasy is very hard . If the common big - phantasy detail is lead out and you only sketch a patch , you get a fairytale . If you spell real high phantasy in 4,000 words , details and all , it tends to be a snipping , not a story . If it ’s something gear up in a fundamentally real world but with a illusion element , it ’s not illusion so much as speculative fable , or alternative chronicle , or a wraith account . That imply that there is an implausibly narrow taxonomical windowpane in which short fable can be recognize as fantasy at all . What we recognise as fantasy is long . Sometimes really long .

Though Pulley claims to read phantasy ( and to write it ; let ’s not leave her newfangled illusion book coming out which may be Holy Scripture 1 of how many ? ) , it seems she ’s only read a narrow-minded subset of fantasy fiction . She bring up teaching a light story indite form and her observations of the failings of fantasy in the curt shape seem to derive from her students ’ composition . Given that , I ’m not sure I can even take this in earnest .
She is correct in one thing : spell inadequate illusion is difficult . So is write short science fiction . Yes , you have to build a world or build the future in few words . And great short story writers have been doing this since speculative short storey have be .
