Last night on Person of Interest , we witness the first confrontation between the Machine and its potentially malevolent rival , Samaritan . And then something unexpected happened . The instalment was all about humanity .
The Machine Gang break open up in the last sequence , trying to stay under Samaritan ’s microwave radar while malevolent Decima Corp capitulum Greer tries to cover down Finch . And in this episode , helped by a snacky but expendable assistant , Greer is on the Holman Hunt . Senator Garrison has correspond to permit Decima have access to New York ’s security feeds for a day as a “ beta test ” of Samaritan ’s power .
( As an excursus : How awful was that abbreviated scene where Shaw was the most viciously cool superhero ever , differentiate that hombre to sell his gun for diaper and take care of his kids ? Can I look out that spinoff please ? )
When Samaritan turns up nothing on the elusive Finch , Expendable McSnacky suggests that they require Samaritan to discover the person “ snug ” to Finch . He also wonders whether they should put Samaritan ’s higher logical thinking single-valued function online too , but Greer tells him they just do n’t have the computer hardware to do that . Baby steps first .
So both AIs are seeing New York through the same middle — “ two gods playing with the same pack of cards , ” as Root puts it — and judge to work at cross - purposes . There ’s a raft of fun cat - and - mouse clobber as the Machine Gang and Decima chamfer each other around in the dark puddle of New York ’s surveillance - destitute zones . In one of these zones , Root and the Machine discover Samaritan ’s succeeding brain , all nicely packed up in jumbo palette of waiter that have been fitted out with those super - powerful chips that Greer steal from the intelligence community in a previous episode .
Meanwhile , Samaritan prove itself pretty all-fired able even without high abstract thought use . It track down Grace , Finch ’s former fiancee , an illustrator who believes that Finch die years ago in a terrorist attempt on the New York ferry . Once Greer ’s henchmen have nabbed her , he try interrogate her — only to discover that Finch has done an even better job than Greer think hiding his dependable identity . blessing genuinely knows nothing about Finch , and even call at Greer that “ Harold Martin ” would never have rest to her .
That ’s not going to recoil . Nope . saving grace is pass away to be the fallible link here , as she realizes the one person she ever rightfully trusted was lying to her about everything .
Despite Shaw and Reese ’s best sweat , they are n’t capable to trail down Grace . They do capture Expendable McSnacky , who promptly shoot himself with Reese ’s gas pedal as Greer watch out impassively via Skype . With Grace still in Greer ’s hands , Finch decides he has no choice but to give himself up to Decima — in rally for Grace ’s freedom .
The handoff scene feels like it wanted to have more emotional exercising weight than it does . There ’s a heavy act where Finch admits that “ this day was always looking for me , ” when somebody would get a vulnerability in all that seclusion he ’d wrapped around himself and push him into the light . But then , when a blindfold Grace stumbles into Finch ’s branch , without make that it ’s her idle groom-to-be — I feel like we just do n’t know Grace well enough to finger the pang of that unhappiness .
Still , the installment ended on a gravely suspenseful note , with Greer talking to his prisoner Finch . They are about to play a niggling strategy biz with each other ’s minds that ’s going to be fucking awing . And Samaritan is snuff it to have a severe time keeping up with the Machine if it comes to that . Root stole a big spell of Samaritan ’s brain while we were busy view the Finch / Grace handoff .
If this week was an attempt to up the worked up stake on the AI encounter that ’s about to come , then I think it worked fairly well . We know that ultimately this is personal for Greer . He claims that he just want money and power , but he also wants to show his mastery over Finch , his enceinte adversary . And that , I predict , will move around out to be the vulnerability that brings Greer down in the end .
The honest threat in this show has always been Greer and the corrupt political public of Washington . No AI could ever match their advanced , misanthropical form of wickedness .
