Thanks to a clandestine meeting with a generator , I have a chance to play with and hear out theNexus One . It ’s essentially , from my time with it , Google ’s Droid killer . It ’s lean , it ’s tight , it ’s better in every way .
My seed was very fast about no photography , and I did n’t want to hazard anything on my author ’s terminal , so there are no photos , hence these exposure are ones we ’ve already shown you . But , base on all theleaked shots this week , plus the very pretty and very clear onelast week from Boy Genius , everyone knows what the phone search like already . infernal region , there ’s even a complete UI walkthroughtodaythat ’s on YouTube . So I ’m belong to concentrate on the experience , and how it compare to the Droid and the iPhone 3GS .

How it feels
The Nexus One is slightly thinner than the iPhone 3GS , and slenderly lighter . No heavy specs were thrown around , unfortunately , since Google did n’t even allow people who they gave the telephone to make out that . The back is definitely not cheap and plasticky , like the iPhone ’s financial backing , and feel like some sort of cartilaginous material . So , not unruffled like the iPhone , but not as cartilaginous as the Droid . It ’s midway in - between .
you could call the excogitation the antithesis of the Droid : smooth , curved , and unclouded , instead of tough , square and pointy . It feels long and silky and lifelike in your bridge player — even more so than the iPhone 3GS . There are also three gilt contacts on the bottom designed for next docking ( possibly charge ? ) use , but there are n’t any accoutrement available for the phone now . It plugs in via microUSB at the moment .
That screen is damn good
Even though the cover is the same size and same resolution as the Droid , it ’s perceptibly better . The colouring material are much more vibrant and the blacks are blacker , as bear witness by putting both side by side and make up various internet site and loading various games . The pinks on Perez Hilton and the blues on Gizmodo just popped a flock more on the N1 , and made the Droid ( which was in reality view to have a great concealment ) seem washed out . The same touch expect over when you compare the Nexus with the iPhone 3GS . And it ’s pretty damn bright , compared to the other two phones .
This is probably the best blind we ’ve see on a smartphone so far . plausibly .
Why is it so fast?
Google just gave Motorola ( and Verizon ) a swift shot to the TSTS , because the Nexus One is astonishingly faster than the Droid . The speed authorization was most evident when we equate the freight of webpage , but even when you ’re just scroll around , launching apps and moving about the oculus sinister , you could recount that there ’s a beefier brain inside the N1 . I do n’t know the specs for certain , but there ’s talk of a 1GHz CPU being at heart , which would crusade it quite a ways above the 550MHz Arm A8 in Motorola ’s newest toy .
When comparing the three phones in loading a webpage over Wi - Fi , the Nexus One loaded first , the iPhone 3GS came in a few seconds later , and the Droid came in a small while after that . This was never-ending throughout many webpage onus , so it ’s indicative of something pop off on inside with the ironware .
I hunt all three through a Javascript benchmark locomotive engine for some quantifiable numbers , and while the results were standardized between the Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS , the Droid still came up at about 60 % of the other two . Surprisingly enough , Mobile Safari on the iPhone scored comfortably on the Javscript benches than the Nexus did , even though the Nexus was able to pluck down and render existent web pages quicker . mention that I did n’t list actual numbers here , for privacy rationality .
That crazy video background
You ’ve no doubt learn about the reanimate video background , but they ’re actually more than just living : you may interact with them .
The default background is the square/8 - bit like one point above , where lines of non-white squares fare in from different sides of the screen . What ’s neat ( even if it is superfluous and battery draining ) is that you’re able to intercept anywhere on the background in a vacuous distance and trigger dots to broadcast out from your tap . Basically , press anywhere to cause blocks to fly outwards . The same thing happens in the “ pee ” backdrop , except rather of block , you cause ripples in the water .
What ’s also clean are the two virtual audio m , which act as a visualizer for whatever music you ’re currently play on your phone . There ’s one analog one that bet like one of the old one with a red acerate leaf , and a “ digital ” one that looks similar to ones you see elsewhere . Sorta full-strength in itself , but it shows that the interactional backgrounds can actually interact with apps , as long as one knows the other ’s APIs .
Other bits
The 5 - megapixel camera is nice , and the flash work well enough for a flash on a phone , but it ’s not spectacular , as seen by early photos shoot and uploaded online by Googlers . There is autofocus , and you trigger off it with the trackball on the typeface of the phone . There is no tap - to - centering as see on the iPhone 3GS .
There ’s no multitouch in the browser app or in the function , but I think at this point that ’s more of a legal consideration than a technical one , since many phones that run Android have the capableness of brook multitouch on a computer hardware storey .
play back medicine over the speakers sounded decent , but not cracking . It ’s definitely in need of a dock — like all smartphones — if you want to hear to music for a sustained menstruation .
I did n’t get a prospect to call on it , because I wanted to keep this as anonymous as potential , and did n’t want any variety of way to hound when I used the earphone . From what other multitude say in their time with it , it functions fine as a phone , and should work as ordinarily as other Android phones in the SMS / MMS department .
So what’s this all mean?
If Google ’s planning on releasing this phone as their official Google phone , it ’ll license them as the premium Android telephone brand out there right now . Even though it does n’t have a computer hardware keyboard , it basically beats the Scheol out of the Droid in every single task that we threw at it . And look it , some people did n’t care the Droid ’s keyboard because it was too affluent and the samara were too unseparated with each other . N1 ’s onscreen keyboard matte up fine , and the speedy CPU made sure that each keystone was interpreted well .
But in the end , it ’s still an Android earpiece . If you need Android sound , this is the one to get , provided Google go onward with the rumored plans of either selling it themselves or partnering with T - Mobile in a more traditional function . Droid , shmoid ; Nexus is the one you ’re looking for .
