This seems like a normal , if muzzy photograph of an object — a regular old cat stencil . The catch is , however , that the photons that strike the photographic camera lense could n’t and did n’t interact with the stencil in any way . So why can you see it ?
In Vienna , a team of scientist led by Gabriela Barreto Lemos spent a good long time multiplying photons . First they produce an experimental set - up in which a photon from a optical maser could take one of two paths ; as long as they did n’t seek to observe which route the photon took , the photon went simultaneously down both paths , making two virtual photons .
Next , both path contained a vitreous silica . Each crystal turned the photon that traveled down its itinerary into a pair of embroiled photons . When two photon are entangled , a variety that one photon undergoes will be reflected in the 2d photon . One spin changes , and so does the other . The scientists still did not valuate which path the original photon went on . So the one photon “ rip ” in two , and went down each path , where it was turn into four photon in two entangled pairs .
Here ’s where it gets sly . On one of the way , there was an objective . In this example , it was a cat stencil whichwas invisible to red light . The entangled duo of photon were ruddy and yellow .
The yellow and red twain that passed through the cat stencil recombined with the icteric and violent duet that did not pass through the stencil . The red photons were directed to the tv camera , but the yellow photons were not . And on the camera appeared an image of a cat in red light , despite the fact that the single photon of the four “ traveller ” that could actually interact with the stencil did n’t make it to the tv camera .
So quantum entanglement hold us a pic made of photons that could never have interact with the objective the video represents . Just FYI .
