I recently regenerate my AT&T contract , and it was a bad mistake . Sure , the company gave me a footling discount on a young iPhone that I very much enjoy . However , we also knowAT&T give millions of customers a bullshit flock when it sells them “ unlimited ” data service but laterthrottles that data to an extreme arcdegree . That ’s the worst !
You ’ve in all likelihood get word about this duplicitous practice recently . The Federal Communications Commission ( FCC)just slap AT&T with a $ 100 million finefor throttling unlimited customers ’ data service . AT&T give you a certain amount of data at normal speeds and then slows those speeds to a creeping . It used to hap after you hit a sure data cap , but last class , AT&T changed the insurance so that information gets throttled when the net is clog . AT&Thas failed to explainwhat “ congested ” actually means . The throttling is real , though . One Gizmodo reader reportedregular speeds of 22 - Megabits - per - second that drop to an unusable 0.36 Mbps after the throttling engage essence .
AT&T thinks everyone is over respond . client agreed to get throttled so they should n’t complain when they ca n’t use the earphone service they paid for . More on this in a second .
Thisisn’t a hearsay , either . I ’ve heard from many masses who ’ve reported the problem andhave even seen speed tests . Meanwhile , the Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ) in reality sued AT&T last year over these deceptive throttling practice session . FTC chairwoman Edith Ramirezsaid at the time , “ The issue is dewy-eyed : Unlimited mean inexhaustible . ”
In other words , AT&T promises its client one thing and then fails to deliver on that promise . The FTC say AT&T is disclose the police by engaging in “ unfair or shoddy acts or practices . ” The FCC now say that AT&T customers are being “ deceive by misleading selling textile and insufficient disclosure . ” If you pay for unlimited help on AT&T , you probably believed that you ’d revel “ the nation ’s strongest LTE sign ” as long as you keep paying your bill . But somewhere buried in the ok mark of that very prospicient contract that you just signalise — and I just signed again — there ’s a detail about “ quash speeds . ” There are more details buriedin this already buried support articleon AT&T ’s web site .
Obviously AT&T remember this is sufficient , which is why it ’s pushing back against both the FTC and the FCC . ( That $ 100 million fine is one of the highest amercement the agency has ever doled out . ) In a statement , AT&T oppose to the FCC ’s fine soberly :
The FCC has specifically identified this [ strangle ] practice as a legitimate and reasonable way to manage meshing resources for the benefit of all customers … We have been fully transparent with our customers …
… reflecting AT&T ’s dismay in its reaction to the FTC ’s lawsuit last year :
It ’s regulate as to why the FTC would choose to take this activity against a company that , like all major wireless provider , manages its meshing resources to provide the best potential service to all customer …
So mislead some customers for the goodness of all is the well possible matter that AT&T could do ? This is n’t some communist Zion . This is America . There are rule .
If you ’re a wireless postman , and you tell your customers that they will get straight-out data service if they ante up their notice , they should get unlimited information service . outright does not have in mind a limited amount until you decide that they ’ve had enough degraded speed or until you decide that the web is too crowded . Not to be repetitive , but “ inexhaustible ” mean value unlimited .
I regret renew my AT&T contract bridge , so much so that I might have to break it . And I do n’t even have limitless table service ! AT&T and other party that insist they ’re doing the right thing after millions of customers have complained and multiple government agencies have intervene will only react to one thing — a fleet reverse to the pocketbook . Hopefully these fines will finally be enough for them to get the point .
Our internet’sshitty and slow down enough . We do n’t need more avaricious telecommunication company produce things bad .
