Sony ’s Internet goggle box are here , and we are bouncy at their debut with hand on . So how does it palpate to use the world ’s first Google TV - power high-definition television ?
The Keypad Is Comfortable and Difficult
Okay , I ’ll allow it , I thoughtthiswas a monstrosity . So let me to put my substructure at least partly in my mouth and say the matter feel somewhat damn honorable . Sony ’s Internet television set remote is lightweight without feeling flashy , and comfortable in my normal - sized custody — and they were n’t lying when they say they looked to the DualShock for inspiration ( though non - PS3 users wo n’t feel at all deprived ) .

That being said , despite feeling far more well-situated than we would have ever guessed , pleasant feeling does n’t translate into ease of purpose . I recover myself looking more at the photomosaic of tiny push than I was at the video ’s card while trying to pinpoint an episode of No Reservations . The correct side of the computer keyboard include a not - so - tender touchpad , while the right breathe your ovolo on a traditional d - pad . It was unreadable when I was have a bun in the oven to apply either of the two — and sometimes found myself doing the opposite of what I want because of it . Between these two control elements lies a full QWERTY keyboard , and a bevy of buttons I would have rather not had to have looked at all at once . Some were color coded . Some were n’t .
The clitoris - based navigation also contains some vexing redundancy , with multiple ways to , say , go to the home menu , or search for content . turn over your protagonist a Roku remote control , and he ’ll know what to do . Hand this same friend Sony ’s net television set keypad , and , well — wish him luck . Sony is obviously expecting a learning curve from cyberspace tv set substance abuser , but we would have liked a greater emphasis on intuitiveness , and less on the here ’s a push button for everything approach that ’s gone out of manner for many company . It ’s possible that after a period of regular use , you ’d fly with this remote in ways that would make Apple TV owner bloom — but up front , that curve is a steep one .
The Menus Are Simple and A Little Laggy
The Internet idiot box ’s UI was about on par with what we saw Logitech tender up — a fairly standard Google TV experience , with minimum deviations . In fact , we would have liked to seen a little more in the manner of divergence — a Sony repp support that in term of content and functionality , the only undivided offer will be the channels within Sony ’s “ Recommended ” video orbit . Not exactly robust .
The experience of float around the menus themselves was more or less comely — Google has a dim-witted program to give manufacturers like Sony , and getting from , say , Search to Applications , was easygoing enough . But there was some appreciable retardation when trying to jump menus , even at the snail ’s pace I was plod at while staring at the puzzling remote control . That being said , interface hitches were n’t any worse than what Logitech ’s served up withtheir Revue , so it ’s still a degree field of study in price of smoothness .
