President Joe Bidensaid in a statementthat he and first lady Jill Biden were “shocked and sickened” about the incident.
“The child’s Palestinian Muslim family came to America seeking what we all seek—a refuge to live, learn, and pray in peace,” he said. “This horrific act of hate has no place in America, and stands against our fundamental values: freedom from fear for how we pray, what we believe, and who we are."
“As Americans, we must come together and reject Islamophobia and all forms of bigotry and hatred,” Biden continued. “I have said repeatedly that I will not be silent in the face of hate. We must be unequivocal. There is no place in America for hate against anyone."
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chicago office of theCouncil on American-Islamic Relations(CAIR) “decried the reported stabbing death of a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy and the stabbing of his mother,” describing it as “our worst nightmare.”
Ahmed Rehab, CAIR-Chicago executive director, said in a statement: “Our hearts are heavy, and our prayers are with the darling boy and his mother. As we await the official investigation of the local authorities, what we can confirm at the moment is that we have a murdered child in his own home, a six-year-[old] who had just celebrated his birthday a couple of weeks ago, and a mother lying in the hospital in serious condition, both stabbed over a dozen times."
“We have full confidence in the authorities to investigate this heinous incident as a hate crime and to do so swiftly,” Rehab added.
