Savannah Guthriehas some tips for new co-hostCraig Melvin.

TheTodayshow co-anchors began their second week working together after Melvin, 45, took over followingHoda Kotb’sdepartureearlier this month. When Melvin admitted to Guthrie that he hadn’t been getting much sleep, she offered him some sage advice.

“I was up late last night,” Melvin shared on the Tuesday, Jan. 21 episode.

“Again?” Guthrie chimed in. “You know this is a marathon, not a sprint. If you stay up every night watching football and getting up early, this cannot last.”

Melvin agreed, saying, “I’m gonna have to recondition myself.” Yet, he joked that he “had to see if the Ohio State Buckeyes could vanquish their opponents!”

“You’ve sat there so many times but this morning is special,” Guthrie told Melvin of the co-anchor desk. “Let’s go, this is going to be a beautiful ride.”

Melvin enthusiastically replied, “Let’s go. And there’s no one I would rather ride with than you. So let’s do this.”

The morning show also aired a video segment of Melvin’s career highlights, including some clips from his early days in broadcast journalism. Guthrie lent her voice to the segment’s voiceover, raving about Melvin’s ability to “light up the anchor desk” as he “brightens every corner of our studio.”

Outside, the “Melvinators” were out in full force to cheer Melvin on for his big day. When the 8 a.m. hour began, cameras showed the many fans who traveled from across the country to be on theTodayPlaza for the occasion.

Kotb, who had been with the network for 17 years, even wrote Melvin a noteof encouragement, which he read live on air.

Melvin was announced as Kotb’s replacement in November, two months after she revealed she would be leaving the role in September 2024. On the Nov. 14 episode, Kotb praised Melvin, telling him she was excited to see him in the position.

“You are made for this job,” she said. “You are literally made for this job. You are that kind of good. You have all the things that this job needs. You’re the right person for it.”
