Taylor Swiftis opening up about her female friendships.

In her newEllecover story, the pop star, 29, reflected on the lessons she’s learned as she approaches her 30th birthday. One of those lessons — “realizing childhood scars and working on rectifying them” — involved her famedgirl squad.

“Never being popular as a kid was always an insecurity for me. Even as an adult, I still have recurring flashbacks of sitting at lunch tables alone or hiding in a bathroom stall, or trying to make a new friend and being laughed at,” Swift said in the women’s magazine.

During her1989era, Swift’s “squad” of female friends made headlines. The singer would document her close female friendships — withfamous palslike Selena Gomez, the Haim sisters, Karlie Kloss, Lorde and more — on social media. And during her smash1989 World Tour, Swift memorably invited guests (mostly women) tojoin her onstage, from Julia Roberts toSerena Williams.

Another lesson Swift touched on in theEllestory was “learning the difference between lifelong friendships and situationships.”

“Something about ‘we’re in our young twenties!’ hurls people together into groups that can feel like your chosen family. And maybe they will be for the rest of your life. Or maybe they’ll just be your comrades for an important phase, but not forever,” she said. “It’s sad but sometimes when you grow, you outgrow relationships. You may leave behind friendships along the way, but you’ll always keep the memories.”

Over the past few years, Swift has kept her private life — as well as her friendships andrelationship with actor Joe Alwyn, 28 — under wraps. She recounted her up-and-down journey through fame on her smash 2017 albumReputationand then on her record-breakingReputation Stadium Tour, but has largely remained out of the public eye ahead of herElle U.K.and AmericanEllecover stories.
