The Edmonton Police Servicesaid in a statementthat West Branch patrol officers responded at 1:45 p.m local time on Thursday to a welfare call in the north parkade at West Edmonton Mall.
“It was reported to police that a Toyota Camry sedan was travelling through the parkade when an adult male passenger stood up through the sunroof of the sedan,” police said in a statement. “As the vehicle was passing underneath a ramp, the passenger struck a concrete beam.”
EMS responded and the 18-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he “succumbed to his injuries.” His identity has not been publicly released at this time.
The 17-year-old driver and the 15-year-old passenger did not report any injuries, according to police.
The department’s Major Collision Investigations Section is investigating the incident, but noted that “speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in this collision.”

The West Edmonton Mall referred PEOPLE on Friday to the police department due to the investigation.
The mall is no stranger to headlines. Last month, three people suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting last month,police said at the time.
