Two dazzling new escargot species have been let on by scientist diving in the Florida Keys and Belize . The two snails expect very similar , leading scientist to suspect they were the same species , but sequence their DNA revealed big differences .

The Florida Keys are made up of a string of tropical islands that are home to the only coral reef system in the continental United States . Species found nowhere else on Earth can be project here , including one of two fresh species of margaritasnails .

What cause them so strange is that , unlike other snail who go mobile with their shelled homes , Vermetidaesnails like the margarita permanently cement their shell to a control surface environment . This means they live a sessile liveliness , a bit like subway system worm , and have evolved to feed by lay out mucous secretion entanglement that trap plankton and detritus .

The Florida Keys ’ margarita snail run unnoticed for a longsighted metre because they are very minor and proficient at staying cover . When a team of scientists came across them , they thought they were looking at the same lemon - and - linden tree snails they ’d spot in Belize .

“ Many snails are polychrome – within the same specie , you get different colors , ” suppose hint author Rüdiger Bieler , curator of invertebrates at the Field Museum in Chicago , in astatement . “ In a single universe , even a single little cluster , one might be orange , one might be grey . I intend they do it to confuse fish and not give them a clear objective , and some have warning colouration . ”

“ ab initio , when I see the birdlime - light-green one and the lemon - yellow one , I figure they were the same species , but when we sequence their DNA , they were very dissimilar . ”

UsingDNAsequencing , the team was able to place the margarita snail in a new genus they ’ve namedCayo , taken from the Spanish word for a small , low island . The Keys margarita escargot has been namedCayo margaritain accolade of Jimmy Buffet ’s Margaritaville , while the key - unslaked lime - color in snail in Belize is now calledCayo galbinus , which means “ green - yellow ” .

As for why they come in such dazzling shades of margarita chickenhearted , the researchers suspect it may be a monition sign for thirsty passer - by .

“ Our thought is this is a word of advice vividness , ” explained Bieler . “ They have some filthy metabolites in their mucus . That also might help explicate why they ’re capable to have let out headspring – on the Witwatersrand , everybody is out to use up you , and if you do n’t have any justificative mechanism , you will be overgrow by thecoralsand sea anemones and all the stuff around you . It seems like the mucous secretion might aid deter the neighbour from get too skinny . ”

verbalize of vibrant yellow thing that pack a poke , have you heard of “ margarita bite ” ?
